Lowe Family Gardens—Robin Lowe

Robin Lowe's Lowe Family Gardens is in USDA hardiness zone 5b on 50 acres southeast of Lincoln, Nebraska near the town of Bennet. Flower beds extend around the perimeter of the one-acre lawn. Robin grows over 1,700 different daylilies. Roughly 80% are tetraploids and 20% are diploids. Robin dabbles in daylily hybridizing, too. She is a long-time Nebraska Daylily Society webmaster and member.

The lower portion of the Lowe home features a large indoor pool and is home to Country Swim School. Country Swim School offers water exercise classes and lessons for swimmers of all ages. Robin is co-owner and one of the instructors. Between 250-300 swimmers and their parents come twice a week for classes. During nice weather, many customers enjoy the gardens and make great use of the nearby play set. For more information about Country Swim School, click HERE.

Robin's daylilies are beautifully interwoven among many diverse annuals and perennials. Garden beds enlarge and become more extensive in the upper portion of the lawn and home.

Companion plants include coneflowers, phlox, hibiscus, butterfly bushes, butterfly weed, salvia, veronica, milkweed in selected areas, coreopsis, false sunflowers, beebalm, penstemon, yarrow, daisies, agastache, and numerous varieties of colorful annuals.

Whenever I visit Robin's beautiful garden, I admire her beautiful and distinctive daylily seedlings. Not only is Robin a talented garden design artist, she's a daylily chef who creatively combines daylily ingredients to create knockout kids. Following is a sample preview.

Hello Gorgeous Gardens—Jenny and Mark Cich

Jenny and Mark Cich's Hello Gorgeous Gardens is a state-licensed and inspected daylily and iris nursery in USDA hardiness zone 5b located on 20 acres in Greenwood, Nebraska.

About 13 acres is in CRP tall grass prairie and pollinator planting established for over 15 years. It's a beautiful sight—thick and lush with native tall prairie grasses and forbs.

Buildings and garden beds interspersed with lawn take up roughly three acres, beautifully displaying over 750 iris (about 615 bearded iris and 140 beardless iris) in addition to about 400 stunning diploid and tetraploid daylily cultivars.

Daylilies are a mix of modern and historic cultivars, including an extensive collection of beautiful daylilies hybridized by the late David Hansen.

Each private tour garden includes a collection of Nebraska Daylily Society club plants from a hybridizer selected by the tour garden owners. Jenny and Mark’s club plant collection consists of recent daylily introductions from Kirsten Hatfield’s Dorsets-N-Daylilies. These featured daylilies grow in a beautiful display bed with a backdrop of Diabolo® ninebark (below).

Sunken Gardens—City of Lincoln Parks & Recreation Public Garden

Sunken Gardens is a world-famous public garden located on 1.5 acres in Lincoln. It was first developed in 1930 and renovated in 2005. Garden design has annual themes—the 2026 theme is "A Patchwork Garden" drawing on diverse designs from American quilt-making history. What fun it will be to see large living quilt patches made of beautiful blooming and foliage plants!

Sunken Gardens weaves together gorgeous tapestries incorporating thousands of different annuals and perennials intermingled with trees, shrubs, and water features—all highlighted by stunning works of art. Pick A Daylily Garden—Scott Keller

Scott Keller invites you to visit his open Pick A Daylily Garden located on an urban lot in Lincoln. Pick A Daylily Garden is a state-licensed and inspected daylily nursery in USDA hardiness zone 6a and an American Daylily Society (ADS) Display Garden. It's a short drive just six miles southeast of the host hotel. 

Scott is a long-time member and past Treasurer of the Nebraska Daylily Society (NDS). He currently serves as ADS Region One Director and chairs the Long Range Planning and Marketing committees.

Over 100 registered tetraploid daylily cultivars and over 350 blooming-size seedlings grow outdoors in the ground to prove their northern hardiness (there is no greenhouse) in Scott's Lincoln garden. Scott's daylily cultivars and seedlings also grow in the ground in fellow NDS member Linda Becker's Exeter, Nebraska garden for additional hardiness and performance evaluation. 

Pick A Daylily Garden

Scott has been hybridizing for 15 years, and the late David Hansen mentored him early on. Like Dave, Scott's hybridizing program is tetraploids only. The toothy, bold FLIGHT RISK (above) and the cool, creamy AUNT DONNA (below) share the same pollen parent, HEAVENLY NEW FRONTIERS.

'Aunt Donna' (Keller, 2024)

INDESCRIBABLE (below) is Scott's first double registration. It also has cristation. Ever hear the phrase "Go where the daylilies lead you?" When Scott first saw INDESCRIBABLE bloom as a seedling, doubles became his new hybridizing focus, replacing full-formed singles. INDESCRIBABLE is proving to be an excellent parent.

Scott has created some beautiful full-formed single daylilies. One I really like is PITCH DARK (below).

Scott's dream crosses are doubles and unusual forms and he has some beauties waiting in the wings, like the following seedling.
