Doug Bremers’ Garden—Doug Bremers

Doug Bremers’ Garden is a small urban garden. The only shady area is in the front yard, where 25 different hosta varieties grow.

Along the driveway leading into the back yard and throughout the back yard, you will see specimen clumps of about 450 registered daylily cultivars.

Daylilies and companion plants illuminate the backyard border 

Doug’s garden features daylilies from a wide variety of well-known hybridizers, with over 40 daylilies from Pat Stamile and over 20 daylilies each from Jack Carpenter, Ted Petit, Jamie Gossard, and Tim Herrington. Doug also grows several daylilies each from Guy Pierce, Karol Emmerich, John Kinnebrew, and Ludlow Lambertson.

In the past few years, Doug became focused on collecting daylilies from Region One hybridizers, including recent acquisitions from Nebraska Daylily Society members Dave and Val Jean Hansen.

Doug’s interests continuously evolve, so you will see daylilies of all forms and colors in his garden. Doug appreciates daylilies with taller scapes and has always liked large-flowered daylilies. Doug is becoming fond of miniature daylilies for their charm and appeal.

Doug is a daylily hybridizer with a wide array of interests and hybridizing goals. You will see about 500 daylily seedlings in Doug’s garden. Most of the daylily seedlings are planted behind the garage. Doug looks forward to seeing daylily seedlings that will bloom for the first time during summer 2019.

Doug has not yet registered any of his daylily seedlings. Doug has a future registration in mind that he gave to his late brother Alan to grow in his Texas garden. Alan texted Doug a picture of the seedling’s bloom the day he passed away, and noted that it looked good in his garden.

Doug has been an American Daylily Society (ADS) and a Nebraska Daylily Society member for several years. Doug is an ADS Garden Judge, and he became a Garden Judge Instructor in 2014.

Ferguson Fantasy Flowers—Linda and Scott Ferguson

Ferguson Fantasy Flowers is a suburban American Daylily Society (ADS) Display Garden featuring over 170 registered daylily cultivars and companion plants such as daffodils, iris, Asiatic lilies, Oriental lilies, clematis, hosta, Echium amoenum (red feathers), coral bells, lily of the valley, tulips, hyacinths, mums, and lilacs.

Daylilies beds surround the house. Some are next to the driveway and the street, and there are two berms in the front yard as well.

A front-yard bed next to the house continues on the east side of the house. A large daylily bed highlights the back yard. Linda and Scott grow many daylilies from Di DeCaire, Bob Selman, Jamie Gossard, and Region One hybridizers.

Linda started hybridizing daylilies four years ago. Two raised backyard beds next to the patio contain her selected seedlings. Linda’s hybridizing goal is for large, strongly patterned daylilies with clear colors. Four of Linda’s tetraploid seedlings will be future registrations—CCXMB, EOLXDD, CCXNW, and BBXBA.

Scott hybridizes, too, and his goal is to produce beautiful daylilies that bloom well in shady conditions. When the Fergusons started hybridizing, they quickly ran out of room. Linda and Scott currently rent a garden plot at a nearby church where their new seedlings are planted.

When Linda’s mother passed away five years ago, Linda wanted to memorialize her. She found Paul Owen of Slightly Different Nursery, who has a “Name a Daylily” program, where customers can buy an entire group of a seedling, and Paul takes care of the registration process. Linda’s mother’s favorite color was bright red, so Linda purchased all of Paul’s tetraploid seedling later registered as JESSIE’S LOVE (Owen/Ferguson, 2014) to honor her mother, Jessie. JESSIE'S LOVE has 6.25 inch blooms on 28 inch scapes with four-way branching and 24 buds. It begins flowering during midseason-late and helps extend the daylily bloom season.

Linda also purchased another of Paul’s tetraploid seedlings registered as CAJUN SCOTT (Owen/Ferguson, 2014). CAJUN SCOTT produces 6.25 inch blooms on 27 inch scapes with four-way branching and 24 buds.

Linda registered her bright red tetraploid seedling as LINDA’S BIG RED TOWER (Ferguson-L., 2015). LINDA'S BIG RED TOWER produces 6.5 inch blooms on 44 inch scapes with five-way branching and 30 buds. LINDA'S BIG RED TOWER is one of the 2019 Region One Meeting registration gift plants.

Paul Owen told Linda about the Nebraska Daylily Society (NDS). Linda and Scott attended the August NDS meeting that year and joined the club. Shortly afterward, Linda and Scott began publishing the NDS Yearbook. The Fergusons joined ADS the year they became NDS members, and Linda is an ADS Garden Judge. Linda’s first term as Nebraska Daylily Society President began on January 1, 2019 (congratulations and thank you for your service, Linda!).

Bob & Joanne Langabee’s Garden

Bob and Joanne Langabee’s Garden has been a work in progress for 46 years. Joanne is a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and former rose consultant for the Midwest. Bob is a rare plant enthusiast and daylily hybridizer.

The front yard is shady and features 13 Japanese maple trees and four rare small trees plus various types of shade-loving plants including hosta, ferns, heucheras, epimediums, dwarf iris, and spring-flowering bulbs. Over 27 different ornamental grass varieties grow here, and many tolerate shade. A few sunny areas contain daylilies but mostly showcase plants that attract butterflies and pollinators. A water feature highlights the front yard.

The Langabees live near Fontenelle Forest and have a herd of eight to 16 deer that think they run a free supermarket.

A deer fence completely surrounds the sloped back yard and pasture area. Here you will find over 175 registered daylily cultivars and over 500 of Bob’s seedlings.

The many interspersed smaller garden beds contain dwarf conifers, cacti, succulents, roses, plants for butterflies, vegetables, and plants for xeriscapes.

 This lovely backyard oasis is a nature lover's dream

Bob and Joanne love to sit on the patio, relax, and enjoy watching birds flock to their feeders; numerous butterfly visitors; and all too often, deer playing in the pasture.

Bob started hybridizing diploid and tetraploid daylilies eight years ago. Bob’s hybridizing program includes diploids and tetraploids.

Bob’s first efforts focused on small and miniature daylilies, and recently expanded to patterns.

Bob incorporates Tim Herrington's miniatures with some of Grace Stamile’s. He works with Bob Faulkner's patterned daylilies and some from Jamie Gossard such as Chaotic Design and Wild Chicken. Bob also has a pink program, because Joanne likes pink daylilies, with some really nice results.

Bob likes daylilies with clear color combinations. He does not intentionally hybridize for doubles, teeth, spiders, or ruffles, but they occasionally show up here and there.

McIntosh Daylily Place, Omaha, Nebraska—Phyllis McIntosh

McIntosh Daylily Place, the garden of Phyllis McIntosh, is an American Daylily Society (ADS) Display Garden in Omaha, Nebraska. What began as an iris collection gradually shifted toward daylilies. Phyllis attended an agricultural display in Mead, Nebraska in 1997 hosted by the University of Nebraska. The Nebraska Daylily Society (NDS) staffed a booth and gave a daylily to new members. Phyllis joined NDS in 1997, and has been a member ever since. Phyllis enjoyed attending all ADS Region One meetings since 1998 plus several Region 11 meetings and three ADS National Conventions.

McIntosh Daylily Place features over 800 registered daylily cultivars. All are clearly labeled. Many hybridizers are represented. 

 Colorful side-yard beds

The landscape consists of several flower beds. Each bed is edged with brick and/or stone.

Companion perennials such as Oriental lilies, hosta, clematis, sedums, and coral bells are interspersed among the daylilies. In the spring tulips and daffodils bloom. Several peonies came with the property.

McIntosh Daylily Place gently slopes upward from the street. The back yard is mostly level. Phyllis’ home is on an extra-large city lot almost half an acre in size.

There are plenty of seating areas with shade on the back patio and pergola with a view of a lovely water feature.

Bubbling rocks accentuate the garden

Phyllis hybridizes tetraploid and diploid daylilies. You will see hundreds of her daylily seedlings in several stages of growth. Initially the seedling area was all vegetables, but now it is challenging to find space for a single tomato or cucumber plant.

Phyllis likes unusual forms and patterns. She has registered four daylilies so far—the tetraploid HOOKED ON ANGEL WINGS (2010), and the diploids YELLOW SLIPPERS (2018), SANDHILL CRANE (2011), and PIXIE CHICK (2006).

Phyllis may register two selected seedlings—diploid seedling 033, a wonderful unusual form of unknown parentage that is tall and reminiscent of MAGIC OF OZ; and tetraploid seedling 081, a reliable triangular flower out of PAPER BUTTERFLY X DANCE ON A MOONBEAM, a creamy tan with a dark eye.

Portable restroom facilities will be available during the tour on Saturday, July 6 as well as on Sunday morning, July 7 during Garden Judges Workshop 2.
